However, the winner of the Open Championship didn't always receive the Claret Jug as the tournament trophy. In the beginning years of The Open, tournament champions were presented with a belt known as the “Challenge Belt.” The very first Challenge Belt was awarded when the first Open Championship was played in 1860 at Prestwick Golf Club. The belt was hand-made using red Moroccan leather. It was a wide belt replete with silver emblems and buckles. If it wasn’t for the truly gifted playing of Young Tom Morris, the belt may have remained The Open Trophy until today. Tournament rules stated anyone winning the belt three years in-a-row could then own it forever. Morris won in 1868, ’69 and ‘70, and then kept the belt. This left tournament organizers without a necessary trophy. And, Prestwick, which had hosted the first 11 Opens, could not afford to commission a new trophy.

As one of golf's four major tournaments, the Open will feature some of the most challenging golf courses and competition found in the PGA. With players like Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson, Luke Donald, and many others around the world seeking another major career victory, the entire field will do all it can in hopes of conquering this Northern California golf course. Day 1 will start with Shane Bertsch, Tommy Biershenk, and Martin Flores teeing off at 10:00 a.m. EST and end with the group consisting of Brian Gaffney, Brian Rowell, and Alberto Sanchez at 5:57 p.m. EST.
Prestwick suggested sharing hosting duties, and trophy costs with other venues. The Open soon was hosted by more than one club, sharing the costs for the new “Claret Jug” trophy first presented in 1872. The Open Championship Golf Live Streaming will be led by LIVE FROM, the network’s signature news program from golf’s major championships.  LIVE FROM MUIRFIELD begins with a Monday primetime show at 7 p.m. ET and will air throughout the week, and wrapping around live competition Thursday through Sunday.   The Golf Channel broadcast team will host LIVE FROM MUIRFIELD from a dedicated set on the golf course, as well as from the network studios in Orlando.  Early week telecasts will feature all scheduled player news conferences, with Golf Channel’s MORNING DRIVE show also pitching in with expanded shows on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Will Tiger Woods Finally Win Another Major Championship?

There have been 16 major championships since Woods’ last win. While there is little doubt his major-less drought has to be weighing heavily on his mind entering play today, he remains calm and collected when speaking with reporters (via USA Today):
“I feel very good about my game. I felt very, very good going into major championships. I’ve had a pretty good year this year so far; won four times. Even though I haven’t won a major championship in five years, I’ve been there in a bunch of them where I’ve had chances. I just need to keep putting myself there and eventually I’ll get some.”
Tiger will be seeking his fourth career Claret Jug on a course that has caused nightmares for Woods in the past. The Muirfield Golf Club was the course where Tiger shot an 81 back in 2002, his worst score as a member of the professional tour (h/t NY Daily News).
Coming off a strained elbow injury that he suffered at the US Open last month, the Vegas favorite to win will have to overcome more than just painful memories of the course to emerge victorious.
Woods will be teeing off at 2:45 local time (9:45 am ET), and will be playing alongside Graeme McDowell and Louis Oosthuizen, who won the British Open in 2010 at St Andrews.
