The Open Championship, or simply The Open (often referred to as the British Open), is the oldest of the four major championships in professional golf. It is the only major held outside the United States and is administered by the R&A, which is the governing body of golf outside the U.S. and Mexico. Since 1979, The Open has been played on the weekend of the third Friday in July. It is the third major of the calendar year, following The Masters and the U.S. Open, and preceding the PGA Championship. The current champion is Ernie Els who won in 2012 at Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club in Lytham St. Annes, Lancashire. The Open moved to a Sunday finish in 1980; it had a scheduled Saturday finish from 1966 through 1979, with the first round on Wednesday. Prior to 1966, the final two rounds were scheduled for Friday. Before 1926, the four rounds were played in two days.
Only two golf courses have played host to more British Opens than Muirfield. St. Andrews and Prestwick Golf Club have both hosted 28 times, though the last at Prestwick was in 1925. This will be Muirfield's 16th. A place Golf Digest recently said was "by any measure ... one of the top 10 golf courses in the world" is ready to hold serve on her first tournament since 2002, when Ernie Els won his first British Open.Muirfield is home to the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers which, in addition to having the coolest name ever, is, according to its website, one of the oldest golf clubs in the world (Golf Digest calls it the oldest).
Tiger Woods hasn't won a major in more than five years, but that matters little to golf oddsmakers. He remains the heavy favorite for the British Open just 10 days away from competition. Woods was favored even more at the US Open (9-2 to Rory McIlroy's 20-1) and less so at Augusta (3-1 to Rory McIlroy's 12-1). The interesting part about the British Open is that this is the first time all year McIlroy hasn't been the clear cut No. 2 favorite heading into a major. It's a reflection of his play, obviously, but it's also a reflection of the fact that nobody was betting on him. (He opened at 12-1.)
Jack Nicklaus has called Muirfield "the best golf course in Britain" and even named his course in Ohio (Muirfield Village) after it. There was another great line in that Golf Digest article from Herbert Warren Wind in 1966: "Muirfield's great quality is its frankness -- its honesty." Based on Muirfield's history (did you see those names?) and the way this year has been going (two top 10 major winners so far), it's kind of hard to see a star not winning this year's British Open, isn't it? It's difficult for me to envision the Ben Curtis-Todd Hamilton back-to-back triumph like we had in 2003 and 2004. It's not hard, on the other hand, for me to envision Els becoming the third golfer in nine years to win two straight British Opens. Tiger Woods did it in 2005-2006 and Padraig Harrington did it in 2007-2008 before Stewart Cink broke the streak by failing to win in 2009 and 2010. The 43-year-old Els, who has called Muirfield "a thinking man's golf course," could beautifully bookend his fantastic career with a return trip to glory at the place that launched him from star to superstar over a decade ago.

The course is nicknamed Saint Andrews, but the actual name is the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of Saint Andrews. The British Open, also called The Open Championship is the oldest major and the only major that isn't played in the U.S. It's July 16th through the 19th this year, and will be hosted at Turnberry in South Ayrshire, Scotland. This beautiful resort's Ailsha Course is where the golfers will be competed, the Open coming back to Turnberry after being gone since 1994. Nick Price was the big winner that year, finishing at eleven under par, a feat some say was only possible because Tiger Woods was still a teenager finishing high school at that point.
Of course, Tiger didn't have the chance to prove anything last year either, after injuring himself during the season. Fans claim that had Woods been competing in the tournament fifteen years ago he certainly would have won and Woods will be competing this year, hopefully determined to prove just that. The course has gone through several changes since the tournament in '94, lengthened by 250 yards, and marking the addition of the 17th hole, which is a challenging Par 5, now with another sixty yards added to it. The sixteenth hole is also nearly fifty yards longer and has a sharp right turn throughout the hole.
The tournament has a history of being difficult but last year was harder than most. The second place finisher was Ian Poulter, who had a score that wouldn't have made the cut in most PGA events. His score was seven over, while Padraig Harrington actually won the tournament, with a score of three over par.
