Of course, he has contributed to his fall from dominance but there have been extenuating factors. In a rare moment of candor he admitted on Tuesday that it was harder to win a major than when he was at his peak a decade ago.” It is because the fields are so much deeper than they used to be,“ he said. “There are so many guys with a chance to win. And it’s only going to continue getting that way.” Even for this positive thinker, the evidence is hard to ignore. For the first time in 25 years, 16 majors in succession have been won by 16 different golfers. Nine of these have been first-time winners. The glass ceiling is flimsier than cellophane. There are those such as the Open champion, Ernie Els, who believe the divide between the great and the good has been squeezed by technology’s advance. Woods would never be so controversial but does note the closing of the partition. The 2001 Players Championship at Sawgrass was the sole occasion when he prevailed. So it was something of a surprise to hear Woods extolling the American architect.“I like Pete’s courses,” said Woods. “He makes you think, which I like, instead of going out there and just swinging away and hitting it and going to find it. You’ve really got to think about what you're going to do and how you’re going to do it.” Alas, the rains have taken many of the options out of the equation. And to this end, rather than have another “War On The Shore”, Kiawah could be in danger of staging the “Bore On The Shore”.“I like the test that a firm golf course brings,” said Woods, as the thunder clapped above the media tent. “It brings more shot-making into the equation. The greens will be holding but, with it like this, there will no bump and run. It’s just too soft.” The game experienced a similar paradox at Lytham. A win on the Fylde coast would have returned him to world No1 and had everyone hailing an icon’s resurrection. As it is, he finds himself on a wildly contrasting coastline with the major year of opportunity running dry.” I’ve won three times this year and winning golf tournaments makes it a successful year, but winning a major makes it a great year,” he said. “You can go from having a so-so season to all of a sudden being part of history.”
